The Delhi Assembly passed a resolution demanding 85% reservation of seats in the 28 Delhi University colleges funded by the Delhi government for students from Delhi.
The resolution was one of the rare ones which was unanimously passed in the Assembly with the support of the Opposition. Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said that students who had passed class 12 from the Capital be given quota in admission to 28 DU colleges that are funded by the Delhi government. Supporting the move, MLAs pledged to raise the issue with the Centre, the Lieutenant Governor and the university administration.
The Party had proposed a similar move in the past. With high cut-offs for admission to several colleges in Delhi, many students in the national capital complain of not getting seats.
Last year also BJP MP Vijay Goel demanded 85 percent reservation for local students in Delhi University colleges. The BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP also met Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia to discuss the issue.
He offered to accompany Mr. Sisodia to meet Union Education to put forward three demands- reservation of 85 per cent seats in 28 DU colleges for students who have passed the senior secondary examination from Delhi, a relaxation of 5 per cent in cut-off lists for these students, and a common eligibility test.
At present, there’s no such reservation available in Delhi University.
